Hi guys, I have 9 garden beds, nothing compared to what you have. But this is my first year that all the structural work for garden is done. So now I can add compost, fertilize, start seedlings, all that good stuff.
But with all the beds you 2 have, Could you give us a run down on what you normally would do to have your beds ready for spring.
Me specifically I am putting 7 bags of compost on each bed and putting mulch on top of that. Hopefully it will do well like the backtoedenfilm i watch. I was curious of the fertilizers and/or pesticides you use before hand. I am staying all organic, if i can. I am making compost and worm tea.
You 2 have such huge gardens I was wondering what you try to get done first before planting for spring. Thank you reading and please keep blogging, I can't get enough, it inspires me to keep growing, no matter what.
John --- I just prep each bed as I get ready to plant --- rake back the mulch, weed (if necessary, which is generally only if I've done a cover crop instead of a mulch over the winter), topdress with half an inch or an inch of rotted horse manure, and I'm ready to go. If I'm broadcasting small seeds (or if the manure isn't as well-rotted as I'd like), I might gently hoe the manure into the top few inches of the soil, but that's optional if I'm transplanting or am planting something like peas. Also, at this time of year when I'm pushing the envelope, I'll sometimes do all this a week or so before planting to let the soil warm up.
