Snake vs baby chicks

Snake in the chick brooder.

We lost 10 chicks recently to a Black Rat Snake attack.

Anna caught it in the act of killing and I captured it with a DIY critter catcher.

Both Anna and I appreciate snakes and could not bring ourselves to kill it.

The plan is to keep the remaining chicks inside till I upgrade the chick brooder.

What a drag that you lost so many!!! Out of 25, 10 is a lot. Do you think it'd be worth it to order replacements real quick before the season is too late? How old are the chicks now?

Jrnnifer --- Luckily, my original goal was to put 15 birds in the freezer. So as long as I'm careful and don't lose any more, we should be in good shape....

Our chicks will be one week old tomorrow. :-)
