The return spring broke on
our new Skil
drill press.
Its been almost a year since
we got it, and today was the first problem in all that time.
I tried making what was left
of the spring work by attempting to bend back the new bitter end so it
could slide into the slot on the shaft, but the metal only bent a small
amount.
A quick call into Skil
headquarters put me in touch with a nice tech by the name of Sandy. He
offered to send us out a new return spring for free. I'm guesing the
spring comes wound in the above metal holder, otherwise it's going to
be a bear to wind by hand.
Steel alloys for mainsprings are usually hardened after being rolled into their desired shape. In that hardened state they're difficult to bend without breaking.
bob --- Thanks so much for that description! That would have helped Mark a lot when he was struggling with the broken spring....
Roland --- That seems to match up with Mark's experience (and with bob's tips).
Heath --- Yep, I guess that's a vote for Skil, even if the spring did break relatively quickly.
