The cable that controls on and off function by releasing the safety bar is refered to as an Engine Cable and the model number for our particular mower is 917.38857 with a 1 on the end but most places seem to not need the 1.
I took mine off and left it off. The spring too. I operate the switch manually. It also solves the annoying problem of having the infernal machine shut done every time I step away. Of course you have to keep your wits about you and not stick your hands or feet under it while it is making noise. I doubt that these safety devices are installed on machines shipped to third world countries. It is felt that Americans are too dumb to keep their hands out of the business end.
That's funny because that's exactly what Mark did to get the mower running. He decided to go ahead and fix it for safety reasons (mostly because I have a bad tendency to get the blade twisted up in hoses and wire and need to be able to shut it off fast), but he showed me how he was able to get the mower going without the wire.
Some day I'll have this mower tuned or another one that Anna will find easy to start and stop. This one was once that easy to start, but hitting rocks and stumps has taken it out of the perfect alignment that it was once at when we first got it. I'll bet if this mower could talk it would say "I miss the suburbs".
