With metric nuts and hex head bolts, there is a difference between the size of
the bolt head or nut and the thread size. Thread sizes are indicated with an
M. So M6 is a metric bolt or nut with an outside thread diameter of 6 mm. This
is the preferred way to refer to a metric fastener. This number is however
not the wrench width that you'll find printed on the wrench. E.g. for an M5
nut you'll need a 8 mm wrench. You can find an overview for hex head bolts here.
For socket heads the sockets sizes are different.
What you call a star bit is often known as a torx bit.
