Butternut squash 2014

butternut squash harvest

Our total butternut squash harvest this year was 27.

We like to get them nice and clean before storing them for the Winter.

Is there a specific time that you recommend when it's good or bad to pick butternut squashes? We were just doing some major garden work yesterday, and stood to look at our 7 or 8 butternuts, wondering at what point they need to come off the vines.

Stephen --- Here are some butternut harvesting tips. That said, we jumped the gun a bit this year and harvested the butternuts before some were 100% mature because it's been so wet that I was worried about them rotting (and because whatever usually kills our vines did them in a bit early this year). So, use your best judgment, but in a perfect world, wait until they're all a rich tan.
